“The Crucifixion, Angels and Saints”

John 19:26-27 reads, “When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, ‘Woman, behold, your son.’ Then he said to the disciple, ‘Behold, your mother.’ And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.”

Jesus also spoke with one of the thieves crucified beside him: “Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

Mary found a home with John. The thief, within minutes, would have his home in Paradise.

We are pilgrims on our way. On our journey, there are many who accompany us. In the icon, we can put ourselves in the place of Christ. Who are those we love and are near us, in our suffering, in our joy or sorrow? We give thanks for their presence, their being with us.

Many of those who accompany us are in Paradise. They knew us personally and intercede for us. Others have become our friends through faith.

In the icon, surrounding the crucifixion scene, are saints who helped the faith grow in Scandinavia, as well as local saints and missionaries from afar.

We are pilgrims but above all missionaries. We share a message of hope.
