“The Call of Peter and Andrew”

"As Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen. He said to them, ‘Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.’ At once they left their nets and followed him.” Matthew 4:18-20

Jesus knew early on that he would depend on others to help him complete his mission of the Father. And so down through the centuries, Jesus has reached out for help. Most of those whom Jesus approached were not fishermen. But his followers continue to mirror that first group of disciples.

The challenge, for Jesus, has always been to find willing helpers. Today’s followers of Jesus are challenged in the same way as his first disciples.

Initially responding to the call is the easy part. Remaining faithful from day one is unique for each one of us. On some days more than others, we will need to close our eyes and again hear his voice and see his beckoning hand.

He says to us: “I will make you fishers of men.” In our hearts, we understand that just as he needs us, we need him.
