“The Annunciation”
Luke’s Gospel opens with a very busy Angel Gabriel. First, he visits Zechariah: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall name him John.”
Six months later Gabriel appeared to Mary and said to her: “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.”
God’s messenger, Gabriel, seems to surprise Mary who is at work preparing the yarn. In fact, she drops the needle. She leans back. This was the first of three moments in her meeting with Gabriel. The second moment would be Mary’s leaning toward Gabriel, listening, mostly with her heart. Third, she would bow her head in acceptance. “Fiat” – from the bottom of her heart!
In this icon, the light from above symbolizes the Holy Spirit coming over her. It passes through the red veil linking the Old and the New Covenants.
The white cloth hanging there is a sign of the future suffering Mary would be called to share in with her Son. Mary does not continue what she was doing but immediately leaves to help her cousin Elizabeth.
“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior.” Luke 1:46
