“Jesus Cures the Man Born Blind”

In chapter 9 of his Gospel, John describes Jesus curing the man born blind. When Jesus encountered this man, his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”

Jesus began the cure by spitting on the ground, making clay and smearing it on the man’s eyes. He then told the man to go and wash his eyes in the Pool of Siloam. After he did as he was told, the blind man could see.

The event continues with the involvement of the Pharisees and the man’s parents. The Pharisees question and abuse both the parents and their son. Then they move on to confront Jesus himself.

We all suffer innocently at times. Blame gets passed around like a hot potato. We get the blame. Or we put the blame on others, even on God. When Jesus witnessed a person who was suffering he always moved to act without blaming or shaming the person. He never avoided them. He always wanted to heal them.

Jesus calls and empowers every person of good will to meet suffering in the same way.

We thank you, Jesus, for the many ways we have experienced your healing power.
